Strandings

The Marine Mammal Conservancy is a member of the NOAA Fisheries Southeast Regional Marine Mammal Stranding Network.  Since 1987, members of MMC have responded to over 152 whales and dolphins with 55 successful rehabilitations and releases to our credit.

Pygmy Sperm Whale - 2/23/08

This male Kogia breviceps stranded behind a private home in Islamorada. Stabilized at the stranding location, he was transported to MMC where he died after 5 days. Click here for more information

Offshore Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin - 1/30/07

This pregnant female stranded in November on Vero Beach and spent 79 days in rehab at Mote, recovering enough to be approved for release. She restranded immediately, however, and was brought to MMC's site for continued rehab. Click here for more information

27 Rough Toothed Dolphin - 3/2/05 to 9/12/05

The dolphins stranded approximately 2000' offshore in various oceanside locations in Marathon. MMC, together with Stranding Network members from the Southeast Region, stabilized the animals prior to relocation to three rehabilitation sites. The duration of rehab was 6 months for the final two animals. Of 32 animals brought to rehab, 11 were returned to health and released back to the wild, with one non-releasable juvenile sent to live with others of her species at a small facility in North Florida.
