“WHALES IN CRISIS”: A new
National Geographic Special to premiere on PBS.
Almost a year ago 28 pilot
whales stranded in Big Pine Key launching an effort which rehabilitated and
released 5 healthy whales in August. The
event, which gained world-wide attention and recognition, is one of few to be
featured in a National Geographic documentary which “…explores bond between man
and whale and looks at dangers facing the ocean giants...” (National Geographic)
The Ocean View Lounge in Islamorada
will be opening their Sports patio to welcome volunteers, and anyone else,
wishing to view the special together in celebration and camaraderie. Viewers will be surrounded with monitors for
viewing, and treated special by their host Gary Dunn, and his manager Linda,
who graciously welcomed the group in. A BBQ dinner will be offered for a $10.00
donation benefiting the Marine Mammal Conservancy’s construction fund. Both,
traditional and animal friendly fare will be available.
The Marine Mammal
Conservancy is presently focusing on completing their rehabilitation center,
hospital, and retirement home at mm 102. It will take $500,000 to complete
phase one of this project, and acquire the land from lease. Volunteers hope
that the exposure that the documentary will provide will boost their efforts.
In May, MMC, the OV, and
other local waterfront establishments will be sponsoring an “On the Water Poker
Run” for their cause.
