PRESS RELEASE

“WHALES IN CRISIS”: A new National Geographic Special to premiere on PBS.

Almost a year ago 28 pilot whales stranded in Big Pine Key launching an effort which rehabilitated and released 5 healthy whales in August.  The event, which gained world-wide attention and recognition, is one of few to be featured in a National Geographic documentary which “…explores bond between man and whale and looks at dangers facing the ocean giants...” (National Geographic)

The Ocean View Lounge in Islamorada will be opening their Sports patio to welcome volunteers, and anyone else, wishing to view the special together in celebration and camaraderie.  Viewers will be surrounded with monitors for viewing, and treated special by their host Gary Dunn, and his manager Linda, who graciously welcomed the group in. A BBQ dinner will be offered for a $10.00 donation benefiting the Marine Mammal Conservancy’s construction fund. Both, traditional and animal friendly fare will be available.

The Marine Mammal Conservancy is presently focusing on completing their rehabilitation center, hospital, and retirement home at mm 102. It will take $500,000 to complete phase one of this project, and acquire the land from lease. Volunteers hope that the exposure that the documentary will provide will boost their efforts.

In May, MMC, the OV, and other local waterfront establishments will be sponsoring an “On the Water Poker Run” for their cause.

Join us on Wednesday March 31 at the OV. Dinner will begin at 6:30 PM, and the show will air at 8PM. Visit www.fla-keys.com for more on rehab/release effort.
